Item description from the seller
Pre-owned
Legendary 1-quality “quality watch” men’s wristwatch from the
Lange & Söhne VEB Glashütte watch companies
The vintage collector’s watch classic from the German tradition 1950s
Original state
In the Glashütte watchmaking companies founded in 1951, the most important companies in the Glashütte watchmaking and precision engineering industry were brought together under a single management. Among them were not only well-known brands such as A. Lange & Söhne, UFAG and UROFA, but also precision engineering and toolmaking companies. The products were manufactured for sale in the GDR until 1965 under the brand – GUB! and subsequently, until 1990, under the brand – Glashütte! For the watches exported to 58 countries, other brand names, such as Original Glashütte! Master Anchor! Limit International – . In 1990, during the process of German reunification, the GUB, which was integrated into GDR combines from 1967, was placed under the control of the Treuhandanstalt Berlin as a GmbH for demerger and privatization. Today, top-class watches are once again being manufactured in Glashütte under well-known brands such as A. Lange & Söhne, Original Glashütte, Union, Nomos, Mühle & Sohn, Wempe, Tutima and Großmann.
GUB caliber 28
In 1950, just a short time after the legal introduction of the quality mark Q in the GDR, the watches with the calibers 28 and 28.1 were the first wristwatches to be awarded the highest quality mark Q by the DAMG, at the request of the manufacturer after a thorough examination. The dials and movements were marked with it in accordance with the applicable regulations. The earliest watch I know of, Caliber 28, has the movement number 120.053 and came onto the market in November 1950 with the signature of the quality mark Q on the dial, but not yet on the gear train bridge Movements that are still from the production of the company “Mechanik Lange & Söhne VEB” before July 1st, 1951 and which also have the company logo “Lange VEB Glashütte” stamped on the wheel train bridge, will be isolated, at least until March 1953 with the GUB, presumably only in a gold case. In 1951, the dials of the Lange 28 and 28.1 caliber watches were provided with the GUB logo and the Q quality mark relatively quickly. Until 1953, the parallel use of movements with the signature “Lange VEB Glashütte” as well as “GUB 28 Q” for both movement versions is proven. Estimate of the monthly production of calibers 28 and 28.1An evaluation of the sales documents of the company Mechanik Lange & Söne VEB and the GUB in the period from 1950 to 1954, starting with December 9, 1950 and the work number 120510 to November 1, 1954 and the Movement number 130265, resulting in a total of 9,755 sold watches of both calibers. Taken together, that would equate to a monthly production capacity of around 200 watches for both calibers 28 and 28.1. Checks of serial numbers and sales documents in the period in between also allow the conclusion that the aforementioned production number was relatively constant over the period mentioned. Since the documents from Mechanik Lange & Söhne and GUB show a total production time of 1949 to 1957, the total number of movements produced for both calibers can be estimated at just under 22,000 pieces.
