This is a beautiful and large art glass perfume bottle, made by the highly respected Australian hot glass artist Michael Hook. It is beautifully made in the sommerso (“submerged”) style, with a bowl of purple glass which sits over a very thick and heavy base of clear glass, which has a very deliberate ribbon edge half way up the bottle.  Two sheets of gold foil add bold golden highlights to this ribbon. The base also has a large centrally placed controlled air bubble, surrounded by four very small bubbles (“bullicante”). It is about 13.5 cm tall and 8.1 cm in maximum diameter. The base is ground and polished, with no pontil mark. There is an engraved maker’s mark on the base: “M Hook”.

MICHAEL HOOK operated a production glassware studio called Resolution Glassworks, located in the inner Melbourne suburb of Kensington, from 1984 until 2005. He trained initially at the Jam Factory in Adelaide in 1980-82, and afterwards worked as a trainee in Nick Mount’s Budgeree Glass in 1982 and 83. I estimate that this outstanding and accomplished piece dates to the 1990s. It is in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or scratches. Unfortunately, its stopper has broken and a small middle portion is missing. However, I am sure that the two parts could be joined (or replicated) by any experienced glass blower.
I have a number of other modern and vintage art glass and similar pieces for sale. Why don’t you check them out? Hit the button at the top right for “Seller’s other items”.
